Travel: Hello Washington!

In the summer of 2013, my family and I drove down to Washington, DC. We stayed at DoubleTree by Hilton, which was about a 9-minute walk from the Pentagon. Our room had a great view of the Washington Monument. We spent most of our time at the National Mall and Smithsonian museums. We were able to visit the Lincoln memorial, one of the most famous attractions in DC, the Jefferson memorial, and Capitol Hill.

The Smithsonian has 19 museums in total. On this trip we were able to visit:

  • The National Air and Space Museum (Washington, DC)
  • Udvar-Hazy Centre (A part of the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Virginia)
  • National Museum of American History
  • National Museum of African Art
  • The Smithsonian Castle

All Smithsonian museums are free (unless you are paying for a special exhibit), but if you want to eat at any of their cafeterias, it can be a bit pricy. You also have to go through security to get into every building.

You can buy tickets to tour Capitol Hill. We just booked ours online.
